Crete Hotel Reviews

Casa Leone, Chania Town

Wondering where to book when you go on your next Crete holidays ?

If you’re looking for a small hotel, in a good location with great staff, the Casa Leone could be the answer.

It rates highly with guests, many of whom return again and again – a sure sign that it’s good.

According to many guests who have stayed there before – and return time and again – it certainly ranks as one of the best Crete hotels.

With just five rooms – all suites – available, this can properly be described as boutique, and the owners give attention to detail and make sure all their guests are well looked after.

Bookings are direct via their own site, but others are available in Chania with both Thomas Cook Holidays and Thomson.

Ammos, Agii Apostoli

This is another hotel which gets rave reviews, and often people are staying there a third or fourth time – a sure sign that things are right!

When you look at a Crete map the Ammos is located just outside of Chania.

A half hour ride from the airport, it’s a perfect getaway and is right next to a good sandy beach. The meals are good and the dining area is open for breakfast through to dinner, with a good choice of quality meals available.

Fabulous Meditteranean views are available from many of the rooms, and the service and hospitality makes sure that the Ammos is a great holiday.

If you’re looking for cheap Corfu hotels this won’t fall into that category, but if it’s a great holiday you’re after this should be on your shortlist.

Sunshine Village Apartments

With a name like this it’s a reminder of the glorious Crete weather that draws people to the island, many of whom will be looking for good hotels in Crete to stay at during their trip.

Located in Hersonissos, the poolside terrace has views of the Med and it’s a ten minute walk to the town centre while the nearest bars, restaurants and shops are just a few hundred yards, with the beach six hundred yards away.

There are sixty four apartments, it’s a twenty minute drive from the airport, and if you’re visiting with children there are two water parks closeby, but to get to and from the hotel it’s a steep hill if you’re walking, not much fun on a hot day.

The Sunshine Apartments get mixed reviews, and if you’re about to book your Crete holidays it might be better to play safe and go for one of the Crete hotels reviewed above.

Villa Holidays

It’s a surprise to many just how affordable villa holidays can be.

What are the advantages compared to the hotels in Crete?

Your own swimming pool is one and if you want privacy it’s a good reason to opt for Crete villa holidays. But if you have toddlers you might want to consider safety, there’s often news reports of pool tragedies involving young children, and unless the pool is secured with purpose built fencing you might be better off with what the Crete hotels have to offer. It doesn’t mean guaranteed safety but there will be more people around the pool area who might notice something amiss, and some have lifeguards, but how well qualified they are is questionable – if you’re near a swimming pool with young children you need to be aware all the time.

Another advantage of villa holidays is that you’re free to come and go as you please without the worry of waking up fellow guests, or them disturbing you. Most villas are within a short drive of shops, bars and restaurants, and if you don’t like driving abroad – and there are plenty of people who don’t – companies like for James Villas have an option when browsing their site to narrow down the villas to those where a car isn’t necessary.

Astali Hotel

The Astali is located in Rethymnon, and as that’s one of the most popular locations for those staying in Crete hotels, it’s worth reviewing for that reason alone.

Close to the beach and the town with its many bars and restaurants, the hotels is well maintained and friendly, with good staff and management.

Rethymnon itself is easy to get to from the airport, once you’re off your Crete flights and through passport control it takes around an hour to get to the town.

With 36 rooms this isn’t the biggest of the hotels in Crete by any stretch of the imagination – but it is one of the best.

Family run it’s big enough to cater for families, but small enough to be family run, and run well, with many guests commending it as first class and the best in their opinion in Rethymnon.

Worth adding to any shortlist of Crete hotels.
