As if the Greek economy wasn’t already in enough trouble, latest figures show a drop in the numbers of tourists wanting to visit islands like Crete after news coverage of the two day strike this week which brought the country to a standstill.

Crete History And Music

A fabulous travel article has been published in The Guardian and reviews the Greek islands, and which are best for beaches, family holidays, etc.

Crete falls into two of the categories – for history, starting five thousand years ago with the Minoans and what can be seen of the past at Gournia and Phaistos. It goes onto the Middle Ages and in a seperate section mentions Crete again for her music.

In this section Lyra – folk music – is explained and where it can be enjoyed by those on their holidays in Crete, Chania being one place for example.

Self Catering Apartments In Koutouloufari

Self catering holidays are a great alternative to hotels, and Crete villa holidays are popular from early May to mid October.

But if you don’t want a villa, there are apartments available to rent, and one way to do this is through an aparthotel.

We’ve seen the Romantica Apartments promoting their apartments in Koutouloufari near Hersonissos, and they might be worth considering. There’s only a couple of reviews on tripadvisor, and alternatives are available for UK residents via Thomson Holidays.

Crete To Welcome New Zealand Veterans

Coming up on May 21 is the 7oth anniversary of the Battle of Crete, and for many of the veterans who survived it could be their last chance to pay their respects to their fallen comrades.

The good news is that the New Zealand government has given the veterans a NZ $2,000 grant to help them visit, and it will allow more to travel to the island than might otherwise have been the case.

Crete Earthquake

Local authorities on the island say there are no reports of substantial damage or loss of life.

It was felt in Egypt and Turkey, and media in Malta say it was felt there too.
